Mountain City of Kalare

The city of Kalare is one of the High Cities of Alera. The city is located on the volcanic mountain named Kalus, and surrounded by mountains in a volcanic basin in the western coast of Alera, west of Alera Imperia and south-west of its nearest neighbour, Ceres. It’s near the sea, Mare Nosteum. Lord Kalarus is rumored to have killed a Leviathan rampaging in his waters. (Cursor’s Fury, ch 50)

See Maps for Codex Alera Series.

It is named for Mount Kalus, a fire mountain, and one of about a dozen Great Furies in Alera.

“Kalus?” Amara asked. “Like Mount Kalus?” “For which Kalare itself is named,” Gaius said, nodding. “Though it is not only a mountain, but an ancient fire-mountain.” (Captain’s Fury chapter 13)

This city is home to the High House of Kalarus. At the start of the series, the city and its surrounding regions are ruled by High Lord Kalarus Brencis. His heir is Kalarus Brencis Minoris.

Kalare is infamous for its slave trade, and is hinted at being the source of the discipline collars almost ubiquitous around the neck of slaves in Alera. The citizens of Kalare are seen to live at the expense of its freemen, living in luxury while the rest of the population suffer in squalor.

The House of Kalarus[]

As the seat of the High House of Kalarus, the city and its territories bear the colors of their High Lord: Grey and Green.

Legions[]

The Legions protecting the city and surrounding region are the First, Second and Third Kalaran. In addition to the legal legions, High Lord Kalarus also raised another four legions in preparation for his uprising. The creation of the Immortals, slave soldiers conditioned since childhood through discipline collars for extreme loyalty and insensitivity to pain also occurred in Kalare and these soldiers further bolsted his forces. The Kalaran Bloodcrows, Lord Kalarus' equivalent to the Crown’s Cursors, are headquartered here, as is the chief assassin Rook.
